GWM Ora 03: A Fresh Line-Up and a Sporty New GT Model

Money

GWM has introduced a revamped Ora 03 line-up in the UK, featuring a new entry-level model priced at £24,995 and a sporty GT variant at the top of the range. Despite its aggressive styling, including distinctive bumpers, performance-inspired alloy wheels, and GT badging, the Ora 03 GT is not positioned as a direct rival to hot hatches like the Alpine A290.

The latest model is part of a strategic refresh aimed at broadening the appeal of the Ora 03 in an increasingly competitive small electric car market. While its exterior suggests a performance-oriented drive, the Ora 03 remains more focused on comfort and practicality rather than delivering a thrilling, high-speed experience.

Refined But Unchanged at Its Core

Despite the new variants, the fundamental mechanics of the Ora 03 remain unchanged. The car previously received a significant facelift, which included a larger battery and the much-requested addition of smartphone mirroring functionality. This update also marked the removal of its original “Funky Cat” branding, a name that had helped GWM gain recognition in the UK. The rebranding was a move toward standardizing the model’s name across global markets, favoring a more conventional approach over whimsical branding.

The Ora 03 was originally launched three years ago with a pricing strategy that set it apart from the budget-friendly MG 4 EV. While initially announced at an attractive price, GWM later revised its positioning after recognizing the vehicle’s high-quality interior and unique character. The company’s UK sales director explained that this realization led to a decision to market the car as a more premium offering, reflected in its initial starting price of £33,000 for the smaller battery variant.

However, market conditions have shifted significantly since 2022, prompting GWM to adjust its pricing strategy. The Ora 03 now offers a more competitive range of options, with the base Pure model starting at £25,000, competing directly with the Renault 5 and BYD Dolphin. The mid-range Pro variant, featuring a larger battery while maintaining the standard design, is priced at £29,000, while the high-end GT model leads the line-up with its sporty enhancements.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Pros:

  • Unique and distinctive design, both inside and out

  • Improved range thanks to the larger battery

  • Comfortable ride and well-balanced handling

Cons:

  • Some missing features and software inconsistencies

  • Light steering feel, which may not appeal to all drivers

  • Slow maximum charging speed

Design and Practicality

The Ora 03 maintains its position as GWM’s only offering in the UK, with no confirmed plans to introduce the larger Ora 07, known as the Lightning Cat in China. The company had previously hinted at bringing this Panamera-inspired model to the UK market, but it has since been deemed unsuitable.

Built on GWM’s proprietary Lemon platform, the Ora 03 shares its architecture with models capable of supporting petrol, hybrid, and even hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. However, the Ora 03 remains exclusively electric, reflecting GWM’s focus on zero-emission mobility.

Final Thoughts

While the Ora 03 may not be the most thrilling EV on the market, it stands out with its distinctive styling and improved range. The addition of a more affordable entry-level model makes it a more accessible option, while the GT trim adds a sporty aesthetic. However, its slower charging speed and software issues could be sticking points for some buyers. As the small EV segment continues to grow, the Ora 03’s success will depend on how well it balances its premium aspirations with market demands for affordability and technology.
